Wellness in the Schools (WITS)
"Our Vision
To end childhood obesity.
Our Mission
Wellness in the Schools is a national non-profit that teaches kids healthy habits to learn and live better.
How
We partner with public schools to provide nutrition and fitness education, healthy scratch-cooked meals and active recess periods. Our approach improves student outcomes and drives systemic, long-term change, shifting school cultures.
Why
Over one-third of children under the age of 18 in the United States are overweight or obese. Children spend about 12,000 hours in school between kindergarten and high school graduation, making schools the ideal environment to shape their wellness behavior."
Brighter Bites
“By giving kids access to fresh, nutritious food and showing them how to make the most of it, we help turn healthy habits into something even better: healthy lifestyles.”
CHALK-Choosing Healthy and Active Lifestyles for Kids
"Choosing Healthy & Active Lifestyles for Kids (CHALK) is New York Presbyterian’s (NYP) obesity prevention program in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) and the community of Northern Manhattan. The program developed out of a need to serve the high risk, predominantly Latino community of Washington Heights/Inwood. The goal of CHALK is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity in Northern Manhattan by creating an environment in which healthy lifestyles are integral to the lives of all children and their families. CHALK’s areas of focus are community organizations and programs, early childhood centers, public schools, faith-based organizations, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital’s outpatient pediatric practices."
